Six schools failed to qualify for the Round of 16 of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition at the first opportunity after failing to win consecutive games in the second round. They will have to wait until the final round of games to book their passages.
Rusea’s High had to come from a goal down late to earn a draw with Cornwall College as Group 1 was thrown wide open as Kemps Hill held off Spot Valley High 2-1 to eliminate them from contention.
Rusea’s High and Kemps Hill are tied on four points and will meet next week with Cornwall College on two points. They can still advance with a win over Spot Valley.
St Elizabeth Technical and Manchester High, which had both won their first games in Group 3, played out a 0-0 draw in Santa Cruz and will be in a three-way race with Mannings School for the two spots.
STETHS and Manchester High have four points, one more than Mannings School, which edged William Knibb 1-0 at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium to be on three points.
Garvey Maceo and McGrath High also won their first games but ended in a 2-2 draw on Saturday, both on three points, one more than Christiana High, who beat St Mary High 4-0, eliminating them from contention.
Munro College was ambushed by a good Browns Town team at Drax Hall, losing 2-1 to the St Ann-based school. With three points, Munro College is now in second place. Alphansus Davis sits third with three points, and Maldon is the cellar team with one point. Brown’s Town leads the group with four. The teams to advance from this group will be decided next week when Alphansus Davis plays at home to Browns Town, while Munro will host Maldon.
Paul Bogle High was well set as they led two-time defending champions Clarendon College 1-0 midway through the second half but were beaten 3-1.
Meanwhile, Ocho Rios High is well placed to take the second spot in Group 2 behind Frome Technical after beating Cedric Titus High 4-0. Keanu Reid scored a hat trick, and Jaheim Williams added another as they improved to four points.
STETHS and Manchester High missed a chance to advance from Group 3 after they drew 0-0 in the second game at STETHS.
Port Antonio High and Central are tied on four points each in Group 6; Port Antonio High beat Yallahs High 4-1, with goals from Kerone George, Dwayne Rodger, and Shaquone Hardware and an own goal, while Dontae Lewis scored for Yallahs.
Central High and Dinthill Technical ended 0-0 in Linstead.
