Champions Cup semis set
Holders Cornwall College will meet top-ranked Clarendon College in one semi-final while former champions Jamaica College and Kingston College will meet in the other in the semi-finals of the ISSA Champions Cup set for Saturday at the National Stadium.
The semi-finals were set up after last Saturday’s exciting quarter-finals that saw close games in all four encounters including Cornwall College coming back from the dead to beat St George’s College 3-2 on penalty kicks and Kingston College edging Frome Technical with an added-time goal, both at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Jamaica College held off Excelsior High 2-1 at the national stadium after Clarendon College got past STATHS by the same score.
In Montego Bay, Cornwall College’s Brandon Curate scored deep in stoppage time for the second weekend, this time from the penalty spot for his team to draw level with St George’s College at 1-1.
Nathaniel Campbell had given George’s the lead in the 63 rd minute, also from the penalty spot and Curate bought the holders level before leading them in the penalty shoot out.
It was the second year Cornwall were stopping Georges after beating then 2-0 in the semi-finals last year.
Kingston College were gifted a lead against Frome Technical thanks to an own goal but Giovanni Mittoo brought the Westmoreland team level with a brilliant free-kick later.
Kingston College would have the final word however when Rajiv Govin scored an overhead kick late in time added on to give the ‘Purples’ a last gasp win as they returned to the final first the first time in two seasons. At the national stadium, Clarendon College and STATH were tied up at 1-1 after just three minutes; Roderick Granville sent Clarendon into the lead in the first minute but Warner Brown leveled a minute later. Jaland Larmond scored what turned out to be the winner in the 39 th minute.
