Orane Watson’s second-half hat trick carried title favorites Glenmuir High to a pulsating 4-3 come-from-behind win over Frome Technical in Saturday’s, November 9, 2024, ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup quarter-final Group A game played at Glenmuir High in May Pen, Clarendon.
Glenmuir High, which had not conceded a goal in its previous six games, trailed 1-3 at halftime before Watson’s second-half fireworks, which occurred in a heavy shower of rain.
The game, a repeat of the 2004 finals, which Glenmuir High won, was Frome Technical’s first loss of the season. They had conceded five goals in 16 games all season and one in their previous six games.
Glenmuir High had not allowed a goal in their previous six games and five in 16 games played but conceded three in the first half on Saturday.
Wayne Mullings gave Frome Technical the lead after 10 minutes when he curled a free kick around the Glenmuir High wall and into the right post, but Conroy Nicely drew Glenmuir High level in the 18th minute when he headed a corner from the far left post.
Stevaughn Spence restored Frome Technical’s lead in the 22nd minute with a thunderous freekick from about 25 yards and then provided Clinton Beckford with a perfect pass to volley home in the 43rd minute.
Watson, who has 27 goals, struck early in the second half. He scored in the 47th minute to cut the deficit to one goal, then drew them level when he converted a penalty in the 64th minute before scoring the winner in the 77th minute.
Glenmuir High was the only team to score a win in the first set of games in the round, as the other three games all ended in draws. Central High came back from 2-0 down after eight minutes to earn a 2-2 draw against Garvey Maceo High in a Group B game, while St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and McGrath High also played out a 1-1 draw.
On Friday, Munro College and Ocho Rios High had also played out a 1-1 draw in their Group B game.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Central High rallied to snatch a point from a fast-starting Garvey Maceo High.
Omarion O’Brian gave Garvey Maceo the lead after just 15 seconds and appeared to be running away with the game when Everald Swaby added a second in the eighth minute, his 11th goal of the season.
Central High, however, settled into the game. Antwone Wright halved the deficit when he scored in the 36th minute, while Ean Noel earned a point when he scored in the 60th minute.
