Wolmer’s Boys captured their third Walker Cup title in the last four years with a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win over St George’s College at the Stadium East Field.
After 90 minutes of normal time and 20 minutes of extra time, both schools were unable to find the winner, despite both scoring in extra time.
The lanky Alphanso Gooden headed Wolmer’s in the lead from a corner kick in the third minute of extra time before Domini James equalised for St George’s, six minutes later from the penalty spot.
It was onto the dreaded penalty shootout in which Wolmer’s emerged victorious, scoring five of their six penalties, courtesy of Rojay Smith, Kashaun Smith, Alphanso Gooden, goalkeeper Shamer Jermison and Jameli Hall in sudden death.
The usually accurate, Kobe Stiebel, missed the fifth kick where he could have won the game then.
With captain Shevon Stewart and Gregory Messam Jnr — two of their regular penalty kickers substituted, Akeem Prawl, Alex Marshall, Ronaldo Watson and Paul Young Jnr netted for St George’s College while Dominic James and Jevaun McKellar both missed.
Wolmer’s formed in 1729, which makes them the oldest school in Jamaica, captured their fifth lien on the Walker Cup which started in 1961 following triumphs in 1971, 1976, 2013 and 2014.
The Heroes Circle School is fourth on the all time Walker Cup list behind St George’s College with nine titles, Kingston College on eight and Excelsior with seven titles.
It was another cruel blow for favourites St George’s College, following their 0-1 defeat to Jamaica College in the Manning Cup final last Saturday.
But the Light Blues can take heart from the fact that they won the rich Super Cup in style.
