A new champion will be crowned in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition this year after Rusea’s High was dumped from the tournament, losing to long shots Mile Gully on away goals.
Despite winning Saturday’s return leg game 3-2 in Lucea, to tie up the scores at 4-4 Mile Gully who won the first leg 2-1 on Wednesday, advanced as they scored two away goals, to Rusea’s High’s one.
It was the first time that a number 32 seed team had eliminated the number one ranked team since the new format was introduced last year.
Trailing by a goal, Rusea’s High rallied in front of their home crowd and led 3-0 early in the second half for a 4-2 overall lead before the wheels came off the waggon.
Javoy Diaz’s first-half double turned around the scores and put the 2017 champions in the lead when he scored in the 34th and 39th minutes and they led 2-0 at the break.
Lenroy Anderson’s goal in the 48th minute and Rusea’s High were cruising and making plans for the start of the quarterfinals.
But Mile Gully would not give up, and Dontae Lawman pulled one back in the 64th minute before Javel Coley got the all-important goal in the 82nd minute.
