The first three spots in the second round of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition were taken on Tuesday when former winners, Dinthill Technical and STETHS along with Manning’s School secured their places.
Dinthill and STETHS extended their perfect record with wins over Enid Bennett High and Maggotty High respectively while Manning’s were held 0-0, dropping points for the first time this season.
Two time winners Dinthill made it eight straight wins after turning back Enid Bennett 5-1 as Giovanni Afflick scored a hattrick and took his scoring tally to 12 goals, Daniel Roberts also scored as he took his tally to nine goals and goalkeeper Asher Hutchinson got on the score sheet after he scored from a free kick.
Dinthill Tech are now on 24 points and cannot finish lower than second in Zone K.
Antwon Smith and Deondre Campbell scored a goal each for STETHS in their 2-0 win as they won their seventh straight game to improve to 21 points and are assured of at least second place in Zone E.
Despite being held scoreless Mannings School secured their spot from Zone D as they improved to 19 points and cannot finish lower than second place after Petersfield High was held to a 1-1 draw by Black River High, their third straight drawn game.
Cornwall College moved to within a point of second place in Zone A after a 2-1 win over Green Pond High, avenging their first-round loss by the same scoreline.
Deshaun Talbert seemed to have solved Cornwall’s penalty problems after he gave them the lead midway through the first half.
The defender is the third player to attempt a penalty and the first to score.
Braxton Richards doubled the lead just before halftime before Devoe Douglas pulled one back in the 80th minute to ensure a frenetic end to the game.
McGrath High avenged their first-round loss to Charlemont High to move into second place in Zone K on 18 points, three more than the losers in one of the most closely contested groups as Ewarton High got their first win, edging Guys Hill 1-0.
Holmwood Technical stayed at the top of Zone G after a 2-1 win over Alphansus Davis High while Christiana High blanked Alston High 5-0.
