Glenmuir High made schoolboys’ football history by becoming the first school to retain the ISSA/Wata Champions Cup title. They beat Jamaica College 3-1 in the final played at the National Stadium on Saturday, November 30th, 2024.
O’Neil Headly scored two first-half goals, both freekicks, as Glenmuir High won the first trophy at stake in the season and joined Jamaica College and Kingston College as the only schools to win the title on two occasions.
They also stayed on course to be the first school to win the Champions Cup and the daCosta Cup titles in the same season.
Headly sent Glenmuir High ahead when his freekick from the right side of the Jamaica College 18-yard box found the far corner of the goal in the 14th minute.
It was the first goal conceded by the Jamaica College team in the competition after they beat McGrath High 2-0 in the first round and Hydel High 1-0 in the semi-finals earlier in the week.
Amarlie King, an early substitute, drew Jamaica College level when he poked the ball across the goal line after the Glenmuir High defense failed to clear the ball from their own area.
Glenmuir High’s lead was restored by Headly when his vicious free kick from just outside the area rocketed into the goal in the 53rd minute.
Jamaica College returned strong late in the game, seeking another equalizer, but missed several scoring chances.
Glenmuir High added another nail in Jamaica College’s coffin when Nyron Allen, a late substitute, scored in time added. This was his third goal in the competition, and he has scored in all three games.
