Camperdown High blanked rivals Waterford High 2-0 at Bellevue Lands yesterday to move four points clear of the third-place team in Group B of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup.
The Christopher Bender-coached Camperdown swept to victory on the back of goals from Ackeem Anglin, who netted in the second minute, and Shavar Henry, who scored in the 65th.
The victory lifted Camperdown to 10 points, four ahead of Waterford who remain in third place on six points. Jamaica College, who have a game in hand, lead the group with 12 points from four matches. The top three are followed by St Jago, four, and Mona, who are still searching for their first points in the competition after four outings.
The speedy and skilful Anglin gave Camperdown a dream start when he collected a left-sided pass from Hakeem Smith on his chest, then turned away from his marker, before unleashing a powerful left-footed shot past goalkeeper Omar Johnson.
Faulty shooting
Camperdown went on to dominate the remainder of the first half, but they failed to increase their tally due to faulty shooting from their attackers.
Waterford’s best chance in the first half fell to Romali Freeman but his clear header from 12 yards went wide of the target.
Henry sealed the victory for his team when he dribbled around two defenders inside the 18-yard box then fired past Johnson, who was well beaten at his near post.
Waterford were forced the play the last 20 minutes of the game with 10 men. Goalkeeper Johnson suffered an asthma attack in the 70th minute and was replaced by outfield player Romar Gordon. The team had already used up their three substitutes.
Ackeem Dunkley came close to scoring a third goal for Camperdown five minutes from full time but his 25-yard effort crashed into the post.
“It is valuable points and I think we deserved it because we were the better team in both halves,” said Bender.
“I thought we controlled the game enough in terms of how we possesed the ball, and we created a couple of chances, which we were able to put away,” he said.
Bender added: “The Waterford team is a physical one but I thought they posed less problems for us here than the first game in Waterford.”
Meanwhile, Michael Williams, assistant coach of Waterford, said: “We played well in the first half but we were just not concentrating well enough, and a number of players made several mistakes and that cost us the game.”
