Garvey Maceo High created a massive upset after beating red-hot favorites Glenmuir High 4-2 on penalties in Wednesday’s semi-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition at the National Stadium.
After regulation, the teams battled to a 0-0 stalemate before Garvey Maceo High’s goalkeeper Garfield Tomlinson made two saves in the shootout to take his team to Saturday’s final against McGrath High.
The shoot-out started slowly. Both teams missed their first attempts, but Garvey Maceo scored their next four, and Glenmuir High missed their fourth attempt.
Glenmuir High went into the match as favorites after retaining the Champions Cup and looked well on their way to becoming the first daCosta Cup team to win both the Champions Cup and the daCosta Cup in the same year.
They were undefeated in their last 12 games since the end of the first round, nine in the daCosta Cup and three in the Champions Cup.
Garvey Maceo was coming off back-to-back losses, going down 2-0 to Ocho Rios in the quarterfinals of the daCosta Cup and losing to Hydel High in the first round of the Champions Cup.
