Defending champion Jamaica College was left stunned at the Asheniem Stadium as they failed to advance to the Manning Cup semifinal for the first time in 12 years.
St. George’s College entered the encounter in pole position as they knew any positive result from the game see them advance to the semifinal for the first time since 2018.
Brian Burkett’s penalty gave STGC the lead against the run of play to take a 1-0 lead after seeing off relentless pressure from JC. The stadium became silent as the reality of elimination sunk in at the halftime interval.
The second half saw JC rolling the dice making several substitutions as they tried to get back into the tie. Super sub-Jayd Johnson made an immediate impact as he slotted home from inside the penalty area to level the encounter 1-1. His short-lived heroics were not enough as STGC held their nerve and secured their spot in the Manning Cup 2023 semi-final.
Hydel High made light work of Tivoli High in the other quarter-final match by dismissing them 3-1 to set up a rematch with Kingston College.
Omario Henry and Gabriel Sebourne were the goal-scorer for Hydel as they stated their intentions of lifting the Manning Cup title.
