Lennon High won their first senior boys football title and became the 12th school to win the ISSA/Flow Ben Francis Knock-out after beating six time defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) 4-2 on penalty kicks after they had drawn 1-1 in the final played at Manchester High on Friday, November 18th.
The Mocho based school has ridden their luck all the way, scoring one goal in regulation in their last seven games and have won the last five on their way to the title.
They joined previous winners- Vere Technical, Cornwall College, Rusea’s High, Herbert Morrison, Clarendon College, Glenmuir High, Old Harbour High, Frome Technical, Garvey Maceo, St James High and STETHS.
It was sweet revenge for Lennon High after they had led STETHS in an Inter-zone game this season, only to lose 2-1 and it was only their third ever win over the Santa Cruz based school in their history.
Tavis Grant’s early goal looked to be the winner in regulation after he beat STETHS’ goalkeeper with a long range shot that flew over his head in to the goal.
Demar James rescued his team, if only temporarily when he headed home the equaliser in stoppage time to force extra-time where nether team even mustered a good shot at goal.
In the shoot-out, Kwesi Watts, Christopher Randall, Grant and Jason Johnson were successful while Nicholas Gayle and Clifton Woodbine scored for STETHS while the usually reliable Alex Thompson and Chris-Andrew Dixon who had won the semi-finals against Clarendon College, both missed.
