Western Bureau:Rusea's High began the defence of their daCosta Cup title yesterday with a workmanlike 2-0 win over rivals Herbert Morrison Technical at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall to jump out to an early lead in Group B of the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel-sponsored competition.

Sewayne Stewart netted the opener in the 69th minute after an error from Alton Nedrick in the Herbert Morrison goal. Then substitute Tevon Brown popped up inside the area, after a strong run and attacking play from Anthony Walker, to beat Nerdrick at his near post.

Herbert Morrison were earlier denied a glorious chance to take an early lead when a penalty kick by captain Shemar Robinson was easily saved by Robert Trench in goal for Rusea's.

Rusea's dominated the latter stages of the second half, reversing the trend in the first that had Herbert Morrison giving as much as they got.

45th-minute shot

On the 45th-minute mark, Stewart could have handed the 'Russians' an even earlier lead, but his shot rebounded off the right post with Nedrick well beaten.

Herbert Morrison, the two-time champions, played well in the first stanza but appeared spent in the second as Walker, Stewart and Kemar Peterkin pulled the strings for the defending champions, Walker looking particularly dangerous on the wing.

Rusea's will next face Merlene Ottey High on September 15, while Herbert Morrison will seek to rebound against Frome at home.
