The Colin Miller Sports Complex, which serves as the home field for Rusea’s High School in Lucea Hanover, is set to benefit from an upgrade made possible by the Ruseas BrotherSister Foundation Inc.,(Brosis). The Foundation is made up of Rusea’s High School alumni, supporters, and Dacosta Cup players. The President, Troy Malcolm, and others saw the need to improve the grounds due to the lack of public sanitary facilities and other amenities.
The Ruseas BrotherSister Foundation Inc, established a non-profit organization in June 2020 with the intent of giving back to the school and community. The Foundation has evolved to encompass a wide range of past students from various eras of Rusea’s High School. Since its inception, Brosis has been involved in a variety of initiatives to support the school, including the establishment of a domain and website for the institution, which is being managed by past students, the renovation of both campuses, as well as the donation of tablets and assistance in facilitating online learning for the student body and staff members during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, plans are in place for other ventures, such as improving the Biology lab and the work center, as well as continuing to aid in the academic programs and extracurricular activities that the school now provides to its student population.
The upgrade of the Colin Miller Sports Complex will include state-of-the-art facilities such as co-ed changing rooms and bathrooms, a meeting lounge and stands for patrons, a memorabilia store, along with other amenities.
Rusea’s was founded 245 years ago and is named after its founder, Martin Rusea, a French refugee who left a bequest in his will dated July 23, 1764, to establish a foundation for a trust school for the children of Hanover in gratitude for the hospitality shown to him. Rusea’s, which was founded on December 22, 1777, is widely known for its schoolboy football successes, having won 11 Dacsota Cup trophies, the most recent of which was in 2017. It is also the only high school on the island with four schoolboy football titles, all of which were won in 1985. With such a history, the school has helped to mould the young minds of Jamaicans, and the foundation saw it as appropriate to maintain and enhance the legacy established by its previous staff and students.
The groundbreaking to start the construction of the new facilities will take place on December 16 and 17, 2022, at the school’s home ground in Lucea Hanover. On the 16th, there will be a Meet-and-Greet Barbecue with the Board of Directors, committee members, supporters, and the school body in the School’s auditorium (Campus 1) on Watson Taylor Drive Lucea, while the Ground-Breaking Ceremony , Media and Family Fun Day which will include a double-header football match, will take place on the 17th on the football field across from the school. The featured teams are the Emerson “Diggy” Henry All-Stars vs. Colin Miller Invitational. The foundation will also recognize individuals who have had an impact on the school’s history.
